The Limited/Exempt Market Dealers Association of Canada (the "LMDA/EMDA") is a not-for-profit corporation which was founded in
October 2002 by a group of Canadian businesspeople who act as limited market dealers.
The goals of the LMDA/EMDA are:
- to educate and inform the public about the role of limited market dealers in the capital markets through LMDA/EMDA events, publications and seminars and through the general media;
- to encourage a high standard of business conduct among the members of the LMDA/EMDA, and their partners, directors, officers and employees;
- to develop practices, standards and requirements relating to capital market participants to provide for the protection of members of the LMDA/EMDA, their clients, and the public;
- to promote and foster saving and investment among the public;
- to provide a forum in which members of the LMDA/EMDA may communicate, confer and benefit from continuing education on matters of concern to capital market participants; and
- to provide a medium through which the members of the LMDA/EMDA may collectively communicate, consult and co-operate with governments, financial institutions and other associations and organizations.
Limited market dealers are market intermediaries who are registered to deal in certain types of securities. Limited market dealers provide many valuable services to small, medium and large businesses, investment and merchant banks, financiers, entrepreneurs, and individual investors through their ability to participate in the promotion, distribution and trading (i.e., buying and selling) of certain securities, as either a principal or an agent. Limited market dealers may participate in market making activities, trade securities as an agent or trustee on fully managed accounts, and receive commissions from the distribution of securities.
